The combined School of Journalism, Media and Communication (SJMC) and School of Social Sciences team were crowned champions of the UCU Inter-Faculty Netball tournament after edging the School of Business 25-23 in a thrilling final played on Thursday.
In a closely contested encounter, SJMC and Social Sciences established an early advantage and led 15-9 at halftime. The champions maintained their composure in the third quarter, extending their lead to 19-14 as the School of Business fought hard to stay in contention.
Business mounted a spirited comeback in the final stages of the match, narrowing the gap and setting up a tense finish. However, SJMC and Social Sciences held firm to secure a narrow two-point victory and claim the gold medal.
Goal defender and team captain Bridget Mbwali delivered a commanding performance at the heart of the defence and was deservedly named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Her leadership and defensive presence played a key role throughout the competition.
Sylvia Nantongo was also instrumental in the victory as a goal shooter, producing an impressive display for the champions. For the School of Business, Sarah Namale and Olivia Atim stood out with determined performances as they pushed their side in pursuit of the title.
Meanwhile, the Faculty of Engineering, Design and Technology (FEDT) were crowned basketball champions after a dominant 76-46 victory over the School of Law in the final.
FEDT controlled the contest from the opening whistle and carried a comfortable 36-25 lead into halftime. Their aggressive defence and efficient offence proved too much for the School of Law, who struggled to keep pace in the second half.
The engineers continued to stretch their advantage after the break, capitalising on turnovers and converting scoring opportunities to secure a convincing 30-point victory.
