Uganda Christian University (UCU) teams competed on the first day of the East African University Games, demonstrating their prowess across several disciplines. From basketball to football, chess, netball, and volleyball, UCU athletes made a lasting impression as they began their quest for regional supremacy.

    Basketball

The UCU men’s basketball team defeated Kenyatta University 55-44. The team held their opponents at bay with excellent defense and quick shooting, securing their first victory. In another closely contested match, the UCU men defeated Uganda Martyrs University 28-27 in a thrilling game that kept supporters on the edge of their seats.

The UCU women’s basketball team also proved their mettle, overwhelming Kampala University with a resounding 56-14 win. Their seamless teamwork and offensive precision sent a strong message to their competitors.

    Football

The UCU Cardinals men’s football team fought hard against Moi University, earning a 1-1 draw. Despite their efforts to secure a win, they were held back by Moi’s resilient defense. In women’s football, the Lady Cardinals delivered an emphatic 6-0 triumph over the University of Dodoma. Nakagolo Jovia led the charge with two goals, while Bridget Mbwali, Adero Rita, and Jane Nantongo each contributed to the commanding victory.

    Netball

In netball, UCU’s team dismantled Kyambogo University with an incredible 79-17 victory. The team displayed exceptional coordination, quick passes, and accurate shooting, leaving their opponents struggling to keep up.

    Chess

In chess, UCU men triumphed over Kenyatta University 3-1, reflecting their tactical acumen and mental sharpness. However, the UCU women’s chess team faced a challenging match, losing 3-1 to Kenyatta University women.

    Volleyball

UCU’s volleyball teams continued their impressive runs. The Lady Doves secured a commanding 3-0 win against KCA University with set scores of 25-12, 25-17, and 25-09. Their male counterparts, the Doves, also registered a 3-0 victory after Kyambogo University failed to turn up.

With a good start, UCU teams now turn their focus to the upcoming matches. The men’s basketball team is set to face Moshi Cooperative University, while the women’s basketball team will take on the University of Nairobi and Kampala University.

The East African University Games, held at Maseno University, bring together top student-athletes from across the region to compete in various sports disciplines. UCU’s strong performances on the first day have positioned them as formidable contenders in the tournament.
