    SLAU vs UCU

    20th March,2024.

    By Carl Loum

With qualification on the line, the Uganda Christian University (UCU) Cardinals are gearing up for a do-or-die fixture against St. Lawrence University in what promises to be their final group stage match.

The contest is scheduled for March 13th at Kavule grounds, Mpigi bringing immense pressure for the Cardinals, who know that a loss in this game means missing out on progressing to the next round.

UCU currently sits at the top of Group C with 8 points, edging out St. Lawrence and Kabale, both on 7 points, while YMCA sits at the bottom of the table with 5 points.

Despite an overall university ranking of 8 out of 23 teams, the match holds extra significance as a win is critical for advancing.

The Cardinals’ recent performances have boosted their confidence in the last two games; a dominant 5-1 home victory over Kabale University—who also won against St. Lawrence with a 1-0 scoreline at their home grounds.

Later, UCU outshone YMCA on 3rd March in a 2-1 comeback after the visitors scored in the early minutes, setting the tone for the last group match.

Team captain Elton David Mwidu expressed his optimism and gratitude ahead of the match.

“It has not been an easy journey this season, but our rigorous preparations have given us clarity and direction,” Mwindu said.

He also praised the character and attitude in the players camp, especially in their last two fixtures.

“Our character is high, our attitude is strong, and we are ready to work for that win. If we lose, we don’t qualify, so every moment counts.” He added.

Mwidu also extended a heartfelt call for support, urging students, staff, and the entire university community to rally behind the team and turn St. Lawrence’s home ground into a battleground.

The Cardinals’ attacking will be led by striker Harry Abiti, who is currently in the race for the top scorer title, sitting in third place in this season’s top scorer charge.

A victory for UCU will seal their participation in the next round of the competition, the quarterfinals.
