UCU delegation touched down in Brasília on the night of 12 November after a long flight from Entebbe. Both the men’s and women’s teams arrived safely and settled into the athletes’ village ahead of Thursday’s official opening. Their arrival followed weeks of preparation that started immediately after they qualified at the continental championships.
To qualify for the tournament, both the UCU Lady Canons and Canons defeated the United States International University-Africa (USIU) in a qualifying tournament hosted by Makerere University at HAMZ Stadium, Nakivubo, earlier this year, and USIU qualified for the World Cup as runners-up.
UCU Lady Canons’ fairytale run in the 2025 National Basketball League Playoffs came to a heartbreaking end after falling 59–52 to defending champions JKL Lady Dolphins in Game Five of the semi-finals on Wednesday, 15 October, at Lugogo Indoor Arena.
With this win, the Lady Canons are just two games away from clinching the championship, while the Dolphins face a must-win situation in Game Three on Sunday to keep their title defence hopes alive.
UCU’s dominance on the boards, out-rebounding JKL 56-49, was crucial, especially as the Lady Dolphins mounted a late surge in the game. Despite the Dolphins’ efforts, the Lady Cats maintained their lead and secured the win.
The 2024 Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) Women’s National Basketball League finals will once again see the UCU Lady Canons face off against the JKL Lady Dolphins, reigniting a 2022 NBL final thriller.
Lady Canons came out strong in the first quarter, establishing a 20-14 lead. However, both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter, with UCU managing just 9 points to KIU’s 7, leading to a 29-21 halftime score.
For UCU, Sifuma Peter and Lwabaga Ibanda both scored 14 points, but their efforts fell short against the Oilers.
However, the second half proved challenging for the Lady Canons as their performance dipped, allowing the Rangers to claw back into the game.
