Football
In their opening match against Brazil, Morocco fielded 11 foreign-born players, the highest number by any team in a World Cup match. Many of those players grew up in European countries before choosing to represent the land of their parents or grandparents.
Artan was not the only person whose World Cup experience was affected by immigration issues. Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey was also unable to join the Black Stars for their opening match after Canada denied him entry because of an ongoing legal rape case in the United Kingdom.
The Lady Cardinals continued to press for a winner and were rewarded with 12 minutes remaining when youngster Ritah Kadondi found the back of the net to complete the turnaround and secure all three points.
UCU’s equaliser came in the second half, courtesy of an unlikely source—goalkeeper-turned-striker Anita Akayo, who also captained the side.
The hosts took an early lead in the 7th minute after capitalising on a misplaced pass from UCU’s Jane Nantongo, allowing the She Kasese attackers to combine neatly for the opening goal.
