UCU Cardinals end campaign with 2–1 win over IUIU

Uganda Christian University (UCU) Cardinals signed off their 2025–26 Pepsi University Football League (UFL) campaign with a 2–1 victory over Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) at the UCU Main Pitch.

The result, however, had no impact on qualification, as UCU had already been eliminated from Group E contention.

The Cardinals secured the win through first-half pressure, with Harry Abiti opening the scoring in the 14th minute. Isaac Ofoyrwoth doubled the lead in the 55th minute to put the hosts in control. IUIU pulled one back in the 78th minute through Rodgers Kigundu, but UCU held on to claim all three points.

Despite the victory, UCU finished third in Group E with seven points, while IUIU ended on four. Ndejje University and Kumi University progressed to the knockout stage after finishing first and second respectively.

Assistant head coach Christian Magooba defended his side’s performance, pointing to the players’ effort and commitment throughout the campaign.

“We approached the game with caution, but the boys showed fight. The start was promising, and they gave their best,” Magooba said.

He added that representing the university remains a key motivation for the team.

“The performance is about the badge. The players must show why they represent this institution and compete at the highest level,” he noted.

Magooba also addressed questions around squad changes, including the inclusion of Levi Kaboole and Murushid Wandera from UCU Mbale Campus.

“Every competition is different. There are factors on and off the pitch that affect results. The players gave everything, but we did not collect enough points to qualify,” he said.

Looking ahead, Magooba said the team will regroup while balancing academic commitments.

“The players are students first. They have exams, but we will reorganise and come back stronger next season,” he added.
