As the 13th edition of the Eastern Africa University Games (EAUG) draws near, excitement is building across East Africa. Scheduled to take place at  Maseno University, Kenya, from December 16 to 20, 2024, the Games will bring together over 30 universities from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan to compete in a wide range of sports disciplines. This year, Uganda’s universities will enter the competition on the back of impressive performances at the 2023 All-Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games, and they are anticipated to be among the top contenders at the regional event.

The student leadership elections at Uganda Christian University (UCU) are a unique process and have become a model that other institutions are starting to emulate. One of the defining features of UCU’s elections is the absence of political parties. This allows candidates to focus on issues within the university rather than being swayed by external influences.

She attributed this erosion to economic pressures, political polarization, media ownership influences, the unchecked spread of misinformation on social media, and gaps in journalists’ training.

I started doing business with furniture; we would make beds and wardrobes in 2022 during my S6 vacation, though it’s my dads’ business. I branched off from furniture to selling shoe racks (it is what I sell majorly) alongside selling body sprays, perfumes and snacks.

His radiance is hard to miss. Bubbly and so full of life, a young man with dreams the size of a truck. Though Somali by descent, he hasn’t let borders confine his pursuit for knowledge. He has decided to transcend boundaries. 

This insatiable desire to build personal competence has landed him in Mukono and he is upbeat. “Uganda is an organized country, the education system in Uganda is well-developed, and I believed it would provide me with the right skills and knowledge,” he tells me as he smiles.

Uganda Christian University (UCU) is mourning the tragic loss of two of its students, Lillian Kampi and Joanne Mirana Wanyana, whose untimely deaths in early September have left the university community in shock and grief. Kampi, a second-year Bachelor of Nursing Science student, was found dead in her hostel room on September 9, while Wanyana, a second-year Bachelor of Science in Data Science Analytics student, passed away in a hospital just five days later on September 14. The exact cause of Kampi’s death remains unknown, as the post-mortem report has not yet been released.

“I wasn’t proud of my lifestyle,” says the journalism major. “I was so relaxed, just sitting there and adding fat to my body. I knew that something about me had to change.” 

Cohabitation is a trend that seems to be growing at Uganda Christian University (UCU), a quick basic survey we did, shows. University students are increasingly opting to cohabit, a practice that they say offers both convenience and companionship. However, this trend has raised concerns amongst various people within the institution. While some see it as a pragmatic solution to high living costs and a way to strengthen relationships, others warn of the potential academic and social pitfalls. 

Many people will agree that succeeding in today’s workplace has advanced beyond having mere academic qualifications and these days, employers seek more than just academic credentials.

In Acholi, a local dialect in Uganda, the name Lagen means “the trusted one.” And that is the name that a pastor in Uganda chose for his son 30 years ago. In three decades, there are examples to illustrate that, indeed, Joseph Lagen has earned people’s trust. 

The race for the Guild President at Uganda Christian University(UCU)  is intensifying as two candidates, Samantha Mwesigye from the School of Law and Lynn Abassa from the faculty of Nursing and Public Health, head to the ballot today, Friday 22 November 2024. 

I think the semester is going to be interesting, especially since it’s my last one here at UCU. I’m going to enjoy myself to the fullest by making sure I watch every game of soccer for the ladies’ team because they will be playing in the FUFA Elite League. I’ll get a chance to see how people play in the Elite League. Additionally, the University Football League is going to be on, and we’ll get a chance to watch our guys play in this year’s edition.”
